Carnitine comes from the Latin word carnus, which means meat. Therefore, carnitine can be obtained from food, especially meat. The redder the meat, the higher the carnitine content. L-Carnitine is a derivative of an essential amino acid that has a role in the energy production function of most mammals. The body produces it through the synthesis of lysine and methionine.

The kidneys can store carnitine very effectively for future use. Excess Carnitine will be excreted in the urine to maintain optimal levels. Because the production of carnitine in the body itself is sufficient, normal healthy adults do not need to get carnitine from food.

L-Carnitine accommodates energy production by transporting fat cells to the mitochondria to be converted into energy. The rate of fat burning that occurs is proportional to the intake of L-Carnitine. L-Carnitine has been considered a popular supplement for fat burning and weight management support.

Carnitine deficiency treatment can be divided into two types, namely Primary Carnitine Deficiency and Secondary Carnitine Deficiency.

Primary Carnitine Deficiency is caused by a genetic condition, where the body cannot use certain fats to be converted into energy. Without carnitine, fat cells cannot be transported to the mitochondria, so that the fat cannot be processed. Usually, it is diagnosed in infants or children aged up to four years. This causes low levels of carnitine in the muscles and causes weakness. If not treated properly, it can lead to heart or liver problems that are getting worse over time.

Secondary Carnitine Deficiency is caused by low levels of Carnitine in the blood. This can be caused by many things, such as liver disease, indigestion, kidney failure, or the use of certain drugs.

L-Carnitine is also used as a sports performance enhancer. Here are some of the benefits of L-Carnitine:

• Reduces the buildup of lactic acid.

• Accelerates muscle recovery by reducing muscle metabolism.

• Increase stamina and oxygen storage.

• Stimulates increased lean muscle formation.
